DOG SEALS DEAL
DOG SEALS DEAL
by Max Blue
Mad Dog Madson burned the gun with high heat,
Gave Champs and their fandom a treat.
When you throw 98,
There’s a chance you’ll be great,
And send your pale foes to defeat.
Sunday, September 27, 2009, Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Philadelphia – 6, Milwaukee – 5.
WP – Blanton (12-7), LP – Bush (5-9)
H – Escalona (2), Durbin (8).
S- Madson (9).
HR – Cameron (23, 2nd; Gamel (5), 5th, 2 on.
Rollins (21), 1st.
Florida loses to Mets and is eliminated. Mets and their fans take satisfaction in returning the favor of the past two years when the Marlins eliminated the Mets on their home ground.
Braves sweep Nats but they are running out of games. Champion Phillies lead by five with seven to play – magic number at three. Braves also trail Colorado Rockies by two in loss column in tight battle for Wild Card spot.
With Madson’s performance in Milwaukee, Phils hope closer problem is solved. Hopes. High hopes.
CHAMPS BOMB BRAVES
CHAMPS BOMB BRAVES
by Max Blue
H-Bomb stepped up the pace,
brought a frown to Tim Hudson’s face.
J-Roll and B-Fran nailed it down,
bringing smiles to this old Quaker town,
as the Champs put the clamps on the race.
Friday, September 18, 2009. Turner Field, Atlanta, Georgia.
Philadelphia – 9, Atlanta – 4.
WP – Kendrick (2-1), LP – Hudson (1-1).
H – Madson (24).
HR – Prado (10), 3rd; McCann (20), 8th, 1 on.
Howard – 2 (40), 4th, 1 on, 6th; Rollins (19), 9th, 2 on; Ben Francisco (5), 9th.
Good start to a 10-game road trip. Win for Champs and loss for Braves cuts two games off the Magic Number, now at 9 – the combination of Phillies wins and Braves/Marlins losses needed for Phils to clinch NL East and post their third straight Division title. The word dynasty was heard floating over the broadcast booth. Easy, guys, Prolipsis is watching.
LIDGE LOSES SWITCH
LIDGE LOSES SWITCH

When Brad Lidge can’t find the light switch,
his team will end up in the ditch.
Champs came from behind in 9th to take lead,
then Lidge broke our hearts with his deed.
Has the peerless closer forgot how to pitch?
Tuesday, August 25, 2009. PNC Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh – 6, Philadelphia – 4.
WP – Capps (3-7), LP – Lidge (0-6).
H – Hanrahan (8), Dumatrait (1), Chavez (1).
BS – Capps (4), Lidge (9).
HR – Doumit (8), 2nd; Pearce (3), 6th, 1 on; McCutchen (8), 9th, 1 on.
Rollins – 2 (17), 1st, 3rd.
J-roll homered on the first two pitches he saw from Pirates’ righthander and 11-game winner, Ross Ohlendorf, one in the first, one in the third. Clutch 9th inning hits by Ruiz, Francisco, and Victorino gave the Champs a 4-3 lead.
And then came Lidge: single, wild pitch, single, homerun. Ouch. His post-game quote stated the obvious: “I didn’t have anything on the ball tonight.” Charlie Manuel to Lidge: “Hang with it.”
Hang it all, Charlie, everybody and their sister can see that the light at the end of the tunnel is a train coming straight at us. We remember 1993 when Jim Fregosi told Mitch Williams to hang with it right up to the time Joe Carter cartwheeled around the bases for the only time in World’s Series history that a come-from-behind walk off homer ended it.
Is that where you’re taking us, Charlie?
DURBIN SUCCEEDS WHERE LIDGE FAILS
DURBIN SUCCEEDS WHERE LIDGE FAILS

Hard to feel good about this win.
Lidge failure gets under your skin.
Francisco and Rollins big hits,
gave Chicago and their Cubs big time fits.
Thank you, Phils hero, Dur-BIN.
Tuesday, August 11, 2009. Wrigley Field, Chicago, Illinois.
Philadelphia – 4, Chicago Cubs – 3 (12 innings)
WP – Eyre (2-1), LP – Gregg (4-4).
H – Madson (18). BS – Lidge (7). S- Durbin (2).
HR – Rollins (14), 6th, 1 on; Francisco – (2).
Chad Durbin, just off the disabled list, the sixth and last Phillies’ reliever to take the ball, throwing mostly 90-some miles per hour fastballs, managed to put the Cubs down in the 12th inning to preserve a 4-3 lead forged on newcomer Ben Francisco’s left field basket homer in the top of the inning. How long before Ben gets the name San? In 2008 the game would have ended in the 9th with a 3-2 Phillies win, and Brad Lidge pounding his mitt in triumph. But this is 2009 and the Champs, as they did this night, need to find ways to win in the face of Lidge’s failure to save for the seventh time. Bitter medicine when the team is desperately trying to fend off challenges from Florida and Atlanta, both charging hard and smelling blood from the fizzling Phils.
Tonight’s Wrigley Field game will go down as one of the most unlikely wins in Phillies history. Jay Happ, Phils’ starter, coming off a complete game, 127-pitch, shutout of the Colorado Rockies was struggling to control his changeup and found himself in hot water in all of the six innings he pitched. Somehow he allowed only two runs and the Phils tied it in the 6th when Jimmy Rollins electrified Phillies fans with a bolt-from-the blue two-out homer, breaking up Rick Harden’s shutout and no-hitter with that one sweet swing. Harden had a perfect game until walking Carlos Ruiz before Rollins’ blast. The Champs took a 3-2 lead in the eighth when Cubs’ reliever Carlos Marmol walked
Ryan Howard after loading the bases with a hit batter and two walks. But Lidge couldn’t hold it in the ninth. To the bullpen’s credit, the guys at the end of the bench, Tyler Walker, Scott Eyre, and Chad Durbin posted three shutout innings and the Phils hung on to win.

Saturday, June, 27, 2009. Rogers Centre, Toronto, Canada.

Wednesday, August 5, 2009, Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia – 7, Colorado – 0.
WP – Happ (8-2), LP – DeLa Rosa (9-8).
HR – Feliz (7), 2nd; Rollins (13), 2nd, 1 on; Werth (23), 5th, 2 on.
Another complete game shutout for rookie Happ. This time J-Roll joined the long-ball fun. What’s going on here? There’s talk of sending Happ to the bullpen because Pedro Martinez is set for his ML return. Please!

SIX IN SEVENTH SINKS SOX
SIX IN SEVENTH SINKS SOX
by Max Blue
Another comeback win for the Champs,
helped by well-known Francona brain cramps.
J-Roll homered in seventh to break tie,
five runs followed, my-oh-my.
Park and Mad Dog then turned out Sox lamps.
Sunday, June 14, 2009. Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia – 11, Boston – 6.
WP – Chan Ho Park (3-1), LP – Beckett (7-3).
HR – Baldelli (3), 2nd; Green (3), 2nd; Beckett (1), 6th.
Rollins (5), 7th.
Cramp one: Fifth inning, Josh Beckett dominating Phillies with 95 mph heat and knee-buckling curve ball, cruising with 4-1 lead. Shane Victorino, bless his Flyin’ Hawaiian heart, lines a clutch two-out single to right to cut the lead to 4-3, and Chase Utley dribbles one to third where Mike Lowell tries the bare-hand pickup, off balance throw that major league third baseman seem to feel is the mark of their trade, but more often than not fails miserably. Like now. Victorino is on third and Utley on second after Lowell‘s throw gets past Youkilis at first. Beckett is cool; he takes the ball and glares at Ryan Howard digging in.
Red Sox fans attention! Phillies fans have seen this before, here is a question for all arm-chair managers. Let’s take a poll. With first base open, tying run at third, go-ahead run at second, do you pitch to the guy who over the past four years has more runs batted in than anyone in baseball, or do you put him on and take your chances with a right handed hitter batting somewhere around .260?
For Terry Francona it’s a no-brainer.
The first pitch to H-bomb was fine,
and he hammered it tight to the line.
A double to right,
what a beautiful sight;
making Red Sox lead die on the vine.
Cramp two: Seventh inning. Josh Beckett is a warrior, but he’s not superhuman. His answer to Howard’s go-ahead double – he drills J. Happ’s first pitch in the top of the sixth over the 370 foot sign in left center field for a game-tying homerun. It was the first homerun by a Red Sox pitcher in three years. The last was in May, 2006 off Brett Myers at Citizens Bank Park by – drum roll, please – Josh Beckett. Yo, Tito: Is that why you left him in to start the 7th, even though he had already thrown over a hundred pitches? What about all those big arms in your bullpen, Tito?
Jimmy Rollins in season-long slump,
all efforts to break out, a failed jump.
Do we dare to take hope
from his game-breaking rope,
that at last he is over the hump?
A final note about those Red Sox fans, calling themselves a Nation, that made so much noise at the Bank yesterday. They were easy to spot with their jerseys, caps and such. And easily approachable, friendly, and not at all confrontational. But what does it say about Red Sox fans in general, when a random sampling reveals they didn’t know that Babe Ruth started as a Red Sox pitcher, and that the Red Sox won the 1915 World’s Series with a game five win just a few blocks up Broad Street from Citizens Bank Park here in Philadelphia?

The first pitch to J-roll, just right,
and he blasted it way out of sight.
One of Phils four on the night,
Myers pitching was tight,
and the Champs won the first Yankee fight.
