METS’ WRIGHT MASHES PHILS

 METS’  WRIGHT MASHES  PHILS

                                                The hero tonight

                                                was Mets’ David Wright,

                                                who batted in six,

                                                with two homerun tricks,

leaving Champs looking limp in the fight.

Saturday, September 12, 2009. Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

New York Mets – 10, Philadelphia – 9.

WP – Feliciano (6-4), LP – Madson (5-5).
H – Park (12). BS – Madson (6). S – F. Rodriguez (31).

HR – Beltran (9), 1st, 1 on; Wright -2 (10), 8th, 1 on, 9th, 1 on.

Feliz (11), 2nd, 1 on; Utley (31), 3rd; IbaƱez (31), 3rd, 1 on.

No Phillies’ fan can sleep well after this. David Wright hits a two-run homer off Brett Myers in the 8th, and repeats with a game-winner off Ryan Madson in the 9th. Jamie Moyer denied another win. Guys! We lead 9-5 into the 8th and blow the lead and the game. It’s not supposed to happen this way; it’s the Mets who are supposed to cough up the lead. The greasy-hands of the baseball gods are at work here, and it’s not a pretty sight.

MOYER BELONGS

For those who doubt that Jamie Moyer will some day be in the Hall of Fame – check the numbers.

HALL OF FAME

                                                   HALL OF FAME

Phillies Journal 1888-2008 will be published next week; the book cover features pictures of the 10 Phillies players who have been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. The lifetime numbers of  these players are documented in the book.  Five pitchers: Grover Cleveland Alexander (HOF 1938); Eppa Rixey (HOF 1983); Robin Roberts (HOF 1975); Steve Carlton (HOF 1994); Jim Bunning (HOF 1996). Three outfielders: Ed Delahanty (HOF 1945); Chuck Klein (HOF 1980), Richie Ashburn (HOF 1995). Two infielders: Dave “Beauty” Bancroft (HOF 1971); Mike Schmidt (HOF 1995).

In the rosy opinion of Philly blogger Max Blue, fearlessly facing the wrath of the Baseball gods, based on comparisons to the 10 Phillies in the Hall, and projections based on numbers to date, the 2008 Phillies World’s Champions approach the 2009 season with at least five future Hall of Famers on the roster: Jamie Moyer, Cole Hamels, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, and Jimmy Rollins.

HOWARD AND UTLEY AGAIN

UTLEY AND HOWARD – 2009

From PHILLIES JOURNAL 1888-2008:

Saturday, October 1, 2005

HOWARD AND UTLEY SHINE ONE MORE TIME

If you want the unvarnished truth,

These two recall Gehrig and Ruth.

Howard scores four, hits a bomb;

Utley smacks two with perfect aplomb;

To miss playoffs would be uncouth.

Fast forward to March 27, 2009

            HOWARD AND UTLEY AGAIN

It’s just a Spring game, I know, I know,

but look out league, Phils ready to go.

Back-to-back homers by Ryan and Chase,

tell us the team is ready to face,

a Major League challenge, so bring on the show.

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE

Phillies Journal 1888-2008 will be published any day now – it begins with a short blog about Ed Delahanty in 1888 when the big lout clubbed four inside-the-park homers in one day. It goes on to tell of the 1915 Red Sox-Phillies World’s Series where in game one, Grover Cleveland Alexander faced pinch hitter Babe Ruth in a ninth inning confrontation with the tying run on first. And then there was the 1916 season when the Giants won 26 straight games in September but still lost out to the Brooklyn Robins and the Phillies’ Alexander threw 16 shutouts on the season.

And then there are the limericks 947 in all, 95 about the Mets,

                HOPE

Despair is a slippery slope,
it’s just that much harder to cope
with poorly thrown balls,
and umpires bad calls.
much better the sunshine of hope.

Schilling Down

Newspaper headline:

CURT SCHILLING MAY NOT PITCH AGAIN, BUT HIS MOUTH HAS NOT RETIRED

                                    SCHILLING CALLS IT QUITS

In Philly he learned how to pitch,

won big games helped by Wild Thing, Mitch.

Then he quit on the town,

                        went on to renown,

and became known as a man who could bitch.

KENDRICK DOWN

Kyle Kendrick has been sent to the farm;

let’s hope it will do Phils no harm.

I still like his sinker,

but an occasional stinker

has caused him to lose his we-trust-you charm.

Davey Doesn’t Get It

Sunday, March 22, 2009. World Baseball Congress. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California. Top of the eighth inning of semi-final game. Japan leads the U.S. 6-4, but with two out Brian McCann fights off three mid nineties fastballs from the unpronouncible Japanese right hander and lays off a nasty splitter to coax a walk and run to first as the tying run. The hometown crowd cranks up the shout: U S A!, U S A! Manager Davey Johnson has Shane Victorino in the on deck circle, ready to bat for centerfielder Curtis Granderson. Shades of last October when the Phillies’ Flyin’ Hawaiian slugged a game-tying homerun in game three of the League Championship Series right here in this park. But wait. Johnson has a brain-lock; he pulls Victorino back and sends up Tampa Bay’s Evan Longoria instead. Woe is US, Longoria is mince meat for the Japanese reliever, lunging helplessly at a way-out-of-the-strike-zone mystery pitch to end the inning and the threat. Japan tacks on three more in the bottom of the eighth and trounces the U.S. 9-4. Woe is US.

DAVEY DOESN’T GET IT

I don’t think it’s okay

to sit Victorino this day.

The game’s on the line,

let the Flyin’ man shine

as the crowd chants U S A! U S A!

COLD IN PHILLY

In Philly today it is cold,

for Baseball this story gets old.

Bring out the warm sun,

with that the game can be fun,

and the season can start to unfold.

Always Spring

So what’s the best thing about Spring?

It’s Baseball, that’s the main thing.

First pitch on the way soon -

a joyful, Winter slump-breaking tune,

programmed to make our hearts sing.

Max Blue is singing.
